Abuja:

His Excellency the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, launched the MWL’s Initiative for Social Peace in West Africa through its international conference, “Diversity and Social Peace: A Partnership for a Promising Future,” held in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

The conference was held under the patronage of His Excellency the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the participation of Muslim and Christian religious leaders, as well as a number of ministers, parliamentarians, and civil society leaders.

The conference witnessed unanimous agreement on the “Abuja Declaration” by religious leaders representing all religions and denominations in the region. The Declaration included the adoption of a joint action plan among government institutions, Muslim and Christian religious leaders, and civil society organizations.

The Declaration also approved the expansion of academic, training, and media programs related to the Charter of Makkah, with the aim of addressing challenges to peace, coexistence, and social stability, particularly by strengthening partnerships in the areas of conflict prevention and safeguarding the national fabric in all its religious and ethnic diversity.

It also provided for the establishment of the “Coordinating Body for Religious and Civil Leaders and Institutions in West Africa” to follow up on the implementation of the commitments set out in the action plan and coordinate the programs and initiatives arising from it, ensuring their effective implementation, the achievement of their objectives, and accurate periodic evaluation.

It is noteworthy that the initiative is founded on pillars designed to address the root causes of intellectual and social challenges, particularly extremist ideologies, while ensuring commitment, partnership, and sustainability through binding agreements among all relevant parties.
